When I Grow Up, I Want to Be Flamenco / Flamencolor

(double DVD)

The first DVD is a 52-minute documentary, "When I grow up, I want to Be Flamenco," in which the Gitans of southern France, who have settled in towns for the most part, open up to the camera for the first time and give their uncompromising vision of the future, of their hopes and dreams, and show us an example, if not of full Roma integration, at least of openness, as well as a conversation about their musical culture that represents the last link with their roots.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region has the distinction of being the result of a rather disparate mix of the ethnic French community and the Spanish expatriate Gitan community that has been settling in the timeless towns of the region for the last fifty years.
Without family, there are no gypsies. Without a guitar, there are no gypsies either! It is common to have celebrations among the Gitan and with Flamenco, they cry out the phrases and it makes you shudder.
When you are a Roma and you pick up a guitar, you don't play Flamenco, you become Flamenco.
It can't be learned. It's in the blood. And the young Gitans who play Flamenco today will be the great artists of tomorrow. It entitles them to ask the important question: what will tomorrow bring?
The second DVD entitled « Flamencolor » is an on-stage compilation of the eight groups of musical artists featured in the documentary film. This was the first time on stage for some of them, because with the Gitans, they play first for the family.
« Flamencolor » brings together 14 very different songs that show the extensive range of Gitan flamenco musical culture in France, from the pure Catalan Fandango, to the Rhumba that is played today at weddings and parties. A moment of pure delight!
